The greatest video game moment in a decade was spoiled by the GTA 6 trailer leak | Opinion

It was a terrible beginning to a momentous week for the video game industry.

I'm sure the Rockstar PR staff is wondering if they'll ever get a break. Developers have a lot of fires to put out, considering they have only released two original games in the last ten years. They can't even adapt Red Dead Redemption to other platforms without inciting outrage on the internet, for crying out loud.

This week's big story isn't so much about offending social media as it is about another leak involving the much awaited Grand Theft Auto 6. Following the unsatisfactory hack of the previous year that leaked ninety-nine gameplay videos in progress, the much awaited trailer leaked online fourteen hours ahead of schedule.

The 90-second teaser for the film has received an overwhelmingly positive response, forcing Rockstar to respond and release the video on official channels. However, this was not intended to occur. The majority of those fans won't have seen the trailer until the morning because it was released late in the evening for those in Europe. Additionally, in a rush to get the news out to their readers, the media was forced to abruptly reschedule their planned coverage.

As far as new game announcements go, it was a dismal beginning to a big week for the video game industry.

The majority of those fans won't have seen the trailer until the morning because it was released late in the evening for those in Europe.

Some of my media colleagues contend that this is all just an advertisement and that lamenting leaks is just the marketing department's way of saying "whatever." However, disclosing a game's existence is one thing; sharing relevant content and videos is quite another.

Grand Theft Auto 6 was not intended to be shown to the public in this manner. Players 'experience' Grand Theft Auto 6 for the first time not when they launch the game, but rather when they see the opening trailer, logo, or screenshot. The marketing campaign and all of its components are an extension of the game itself in the modern world.

Watch parties for this trailer were organized by GTA enthusiasts, and YouTubers and media outlets planned live streams, reaction videos, podcasts, articles, and more. A large-scale game reveal, like this one, is a chance for fans to unite around a single moment and a community event. And there's never a better time like this for video games or entertainment in general.

This year hasn't seen many memorable moments for us. Yes, there have been many successful game releases. But it's not been a great year for exciting announcements, with no E3 and platform holders concentrating primarily on what was coming out in 2023 (apart from Xbox, which showed a little more with its summer showcase). But the unveiling of a Grand Theft Auto is an occasion that comes only once every ten years, and many people chose to miss it.

Is it significant in the overall scheme of things? Not really, though. The Rockstar team should be proud of the trailer because it is undoubtedly impressive. Based on the conversation on social media and the information provided, it appears that fans are enthusiastic and the amount of views is unprecedented. When it launches in 2025, it will most likely be the largest video game launch ever, and we would have forgotten all about the earlier trailer leak.

But it all seems a bit of a shame at the moment.
